Author's Purpose is Easy as P.I.E.

This week we have been working on author's purpose. We learned that author's purpose was easy as P.I.E. (Persuade, Inform, Entertain). The kids worked in a center sorting cards into the three purposes. I also created posters to hang around the room to remind them of the three purposes. You can purchase the activity at my TpT Store.

Then, we took old Scholastic book catalogs and magazines and made a foldable with example of each of the three main author's purposes. We put each purpose on the front with a sentence saying what that means. We did persuade together-- "Persuade--  trying to make you to do something".

Then, each child chose books for entertain and inform and advertisements for persuade and wrote a sentence about why they knew that example fell in that category.

The kids really enjoyed this activity and we got some more practice making our own rubric. You can download the rubric by clicking here--> Rubric.

Hope this helps make author's purpose as easy as P.I.E. for your kids too! Enjoy!
